Monday, December 14th:

  • Introduction to Lord of the Flies
  • Groups made for Survivor game- handout for game rules Survivor.doc
  • Themes assigned to groups- completed the "Who Should Survive" handout and submitted (if absent, complete on your own and submit) WHO SHOULD SURVIVE.doc
  • Viewed LOTF introductory powerpoint- took notes (if absent, view and take notes- very important!) Lord of the Flies Intro.ppt
  • Novels handed out- if absent, see me to get one; in the meantime, read an e-text version online for Wednesday's class
  • Groups began working on posters- will finish on Wednesday Survivor Introduction.doc
  • Handout:  Ch. 1-2 questions  Questions 1-2.doc
  • Homework:  Read Ch. 1 of the book- answer questions for Ch. 1 on the handout- be ready for quiz on the reading!

 

Thursday, December 10th:

  • Passed back quiz on Cantos 1,3 and5- passed back Canto 33 summaries
  • Handout:  Capitalization  (see make-up folder).  Completed and placed in "Language Notes" section
  • Homework:  None!  No textbook needed next week

 

Tuesday, December 8th:

  • Journal 10:  Virgil acts as Dante's guide. Who guides you in life?  In what ways?
  •   Passed back questions from Canto 1,3 and 5- showed students Friday's quiz grades
  • Handout:  Questions Cantos 33 and 34.docx.  Answered questions for Canto 33- reviewed questions.
  • Handout:  Canto 34.  See make-up folder
  • Read Canto 34, pages 659-663.  Completed and discussed Canto 34 worksheet. Class work grade given.

  • Homework:  1- Finish Canto 34 handout if it wasn't completed in class  2- Test on The Inferno Thursday  3- Don't need to bring textbooks Thursday

 

Friday, December 4th:

  • Passed back quizzes and reviewed answers- introduction to The Divine Comedy
  • Handout:  Copy of Canto 33 (see make-up folder)
  • Read Canto 33- took notes as we read
  • Exit ticket (class work):  On a 1/2 sheet of paper, we wrote a summary of Canto 33- included all the important parts
  • Homework:  None!  Bring textbook until further notice

 

Wednesday, December 2nd:

  • Journal #9:  Do pro athletes deserve the big bucks they get paid?  Discuss.
  • Collected homework- sign for the gate of hell
  • Handout:  Allusions  Allusions of Grandeur.doc.  Person who can identify the most allusions (including where they come from) will receive extra credit on Friday's quiz!
  • Handout:  Canto 5 (See make-up folder- handouts section)
  • Read Canto 5- discussed plot and allusions
  • Handout: Questions Cantos 1,3,and 5.docx.  Began answering the questions.

Monday, November 30th:

  • Review of the Canto 1 reading from last week
  • Finished reading Canto 1- completed the front of Tuesday's worksheet
  • Read Canto 3
  • Completed the back of Tuesday's worksheet using a tercet from Canto 3 only!
  • Exit ticket: Complete a "Somebody Wanted but So" activity using the plot from Canto 1 or 2- submit to me (if absent, see me if you have questions about this activity)
  • Homework:  Create a sign for the entrance to hell- use the last line (line 9 ) of the hell sign from Canto 3 ("Abandon All Hope Ye Who Enter Here").  You will be graded on effort, creativity, completion, and accuracy.  Have fun with it!

 

 

Tuesday, November 24th:

  • Journal #8:  Dante gives us a clear picture of heaven and hell.  What are your beliefs about what happens after death?
  • Quiz on The Divine Comedy introductory notes
  • Passed back Oedipus Rex tests- reviewed answers
  • Reviewed allegory and divine retribution
  • Handouts:  "9 Circles of Hell" and "Canto #1"- see handouts section of the make-up folder
  • Began reading Canto 1 in the textbook- read lines 1- 87.  Began filling out Canto 1 handout
  • Homework:  None!  Enjoy your break.. bring textbooks until further notice.

 

Friday, November 20th:

  • No journal
  • Collected literary analysis essay- Yeah! 
  • Finished The Divine Comedy introductory powerpoint (see note-taking sheet from Wednesday's class)
  • Watched a portion of a movie introducing Dante's life and The Divine Comedy- took notes
  • Handout for partner work:  modern day sins.doc.  Completed the handout (place in "work" section).  Turned in a separate sheet of paper (to Ms. Burkhart) listing the sins in order that you and your partner came up with.
  • Homework:  1- Quiz on The Divine Comedy intro. notes (from the powerpoint and the movie)  2- Bring your textbook until further notice

 

Wednesday, November 18th:

  • No journal
  • Passed back several assignments
  • Self edit and peer edit of literary analysis rough draft #2 (if you did not have draft #2 today, you need to complete all of these steps on that draft prior to the final draft being due on Friday)

  • Individual help with literary analysis drafts- editing, using quotes, using personal commentary, adding transitions, etc...
  • Passes given to the Writing Reef for essay work
  • Handout:  The Inferno powerpoint notes  Divine Comedy ppt Notes.doc
  • Began viewing the power point-  took notes up to the "Language" section- we will finish the notes on Friday
  • Homework:  1- FINAL Oedipus Rex literary analysis due Friday (typed, double-spaced)-  you must turn in both drafts with the final copy  2-  Bring your textbook until further notice

  • Checked 1/2 sheet and rough draft #1 for Oedipus Rex essay

  • Notes:  outline for this essay (see a classmate for the notes)
