Tuesday, December 15th:

  • Journal #8:  Beowulf was an epic hero.  What heros do you have in life today?  Discuss.
  • Handout:  Extra credit option  epic movie assignment.doc
  • Discussed reminders for the Hamlet paper:  Handout  Literary analysis reminders.doc
  • Began reading Beowulf, page 21.  Began filling out guided reading sheet (handed out Friday); placed sticky notes to identify boasts, kennings, caesuras, and religious references
  • Homework:  1- Finish reading Part I of Beowulf (pages 21-38)- complete guided reading sheet for these sections and continue with sticky notes  2- Bring textbook until further notice

 

 

Friday, December 11th:

  • No journal
  • Checked Anglo-Saxon notes
  • Quiz on Anglo-Saxon history (see me to make up if absent)
  • Handout:  Beowulf study guide and A-S/ epic notes (see make-up folder)
  • Highlighted info. on the study guide notes (see a classmate for these items)
  • Gave back thesis statements (graded on a check scale; can turn back in to me for a higher score prior to the paper's due date)
  • Homework:  Work on your paper!   Bring your textbook until further notice

 

Wednesday, December 9th:

  • No journal
  • Met in Lab 202- continued researching for Hamlet papers
  • Note:  as your 3rd source, you may use a website with a ".edu" base- you must still have 2 literary criticisms from a database or a book
  • Turned in thesis statements (due by the end of the block)
  • Homework:  Read textbooks (yes, the big green ones) pages 6-17 and take notes as you read.  Bring your textbooks to class until further notice.

 

Monday, December 7th:

  • No journal
  • Met in the library for research on the Hamlet  essay
  • Reviewed databases and literary criticisms
  • Homework:  Meet in Lab 202 on Wednesday- have a rough thesis statement ready

 

Thursday, December 3rd:

  • No journal
  • Handout:  Hamlet essay instructions Critical Analysis Paper.docx
  • Practiced with literary theories (no need to make up)
  • Finished Hamlet paideia- 45 minutes
  • Homework:  Decide on a topic for your essay- develop a rough thesis  ****MEET IN THE LIBRARY ON MONDAY- NO TARDIES!

 

Tuesday, December 1st:

  • No journal
  • Hamlet paideia!
  • Submitted paideia questions and Works Cited pages
  • Homework:  We will spend 45 minutes on Thursday continuing the graded discussion.  Be prepared!

 

Wednesday, November 25th:

  • No journal
  • Preparation time for next Tuesday's paideia (computers were available, Ms. Burkhat was available to look over questions developed, etc...)
  • *Notes:  You must have a Works Cited page ready to turn in for any outside sources you used (and you should be using some of your own outside sources).  You must have your three questions ready and written on the given handout (from Monday's class).  Have responses ready (including textual evidence) for questions others might ask (see the sheet given to you about possible topices).  This discussion will count 10 times on the 2nd quarter!
  • Homework:  Paideia on Tuesday, December 1st!  Be ready with your questions handout and your Works Cited page (you also need to be familiar with ALL of the articles and poems in the given packet). 

 

Monday, November 23rd:

  • No journal
  • Collected "To be or not to be" parodies (with rubrics)
  • Dramatic terms quiz
  • Finished reading the play!  (Act V, scene 2)- discussed parts of the scene
  • Group work:  Each group was given a major character or 2 minor characters.  The group was to come up with 5 personality traits to describe the character(s).  For each trait, they needed to find a quote from the book to use as proof of the quote (include a citation).  If you were absent, complete this assignment using Queen Gertrude and submit to me.
  • Handouts:  Paideia rubric, Paideia question sheet, Paideia packet (see handouts section of the make-up binder for these handouts- ABSOLUTE MUST-HAVES FOR DECEMBER 1ST!)
  • Homework:  No homework due Wednesday.  Paideia on December 1st!

 

Thursday, November 19th:

  • No journal
  • Passed back quizzes- passed out 1st quarter grade reports
  • Finished reading Act V, scene 1- discussed
  • Watched portions of the Hamlet movie- from Polonius' death to the end of Act V, scene 1
  • Began reading Act V, scene 2- pages 259-through the entrance of Osric on page 263
  • Homework:  1- Parody due Monday 2- Dramatic terms quiz Monday  3- Read Act V, scene 2 pages 263- the top of 273 (end with "Let be.")

 

Tuesday, November 17th:

  • Journal #7:  What is the biggest problem facing the United States today?
  • Passed back Heart of Darkness tests- reviewed the grades and the answers
  • Reviewed Hamlet Acts III and IV
  • Quiz on Acts III and IV
  • Parody Assignment:   Parody assessment.doc (rubric).  Click for examples-  parodies of to be or not to be.docDevelop a parody of Hamlet's "To be or not to be" soliloquy.  Start off "To _________ or not to _____________."  Choose something that represents you (To dance or not to dance, To read or not to read...).  Keep with the style of the original, but BE ORIGINAL! Due Monday, November 23rd.  (Might be a good idea to get it done and turned in on Thursday- you will have other work due on Monday)
  • Due date:  Paideia will be held on Tuesday, December 1st.
  • Review game for dramatic terms (Review on your own- quiz on Monday)
  • Began reading Act V, scene 1 (ended on line 100)
  • Homework:  1- Parodies due Monday 2- Quiz on dramatic terms on Monday  3- Paideia on Tuesday, December 1st
